Getting into it a bit. Good show, though I still prefer BSG (can you tell there are no new books at the Borders nearby?)

One thing I'm not getting. Why, exactly, did the camp split in two? I mean, I understand the argument, but it's a stupid argument. Obviously, you are less likely to die of heat stroke or thirst near the caves. And while I certainly understand the need to keep the bonfires going, really, how many people does it take to watch a fire? Three? Six, maybe? They could take it in one-week shifts, each shift carrying enough water for the whole week. I mean, if the rescue ship comes (not likely, because then this would be a *very* short-lived show), what are they going to do, take just the people on the beach and strand the rest? And the arguments people were making assuming there had to be a split - did they honestly believe that the beach-people would really just run off without even saying "No, wait, we have to get the other half of the passengers"?

I don't know the answer to your question, and I've never seen the show, but the first thing that sprung to mind is "Lord of the Flies."

But, a guess-- maybe due to stress they didn't realize they could take turns tending the fires and thought that a Fire Crew, who'd always know what to do would be a Good Idea so some inexperienced fire-tender doesn't kill the fire?

...I don't know.
