People are stupid. I wander among a forum full of BSG-talking, and such silliness.

"If I were in Adama's place, I would've used the law to get rid of Roslin - I mean what about separation of church and state!"

This isn't America. This is somewhere else. As near as I can tell, they don't *have* separation of church and state. We've only seen references to two religions, one of which is Cylon. A priest is required to swear in a new president. We know they have banned books, so where did you get the idea that they would of course have separation of church and state?

Or, when I mentioned that Kobol's ruins aren't nearly ruined enough for being completely abandoned for 2,000 years:

Visit Iraq, visit Italy, visit Peru (Inca ruins), visit Mexico, visit Arizona (Anazasi ruins), visit Greece, visit China, visit Japan, visit Jeruselum, etc.... Even with zero maintainence stuff just doesn't disappear back into the earth. Especially when one realizes that the story claims a very sophistacated and developed culture capaple of traveling to the stars. Think Manhatten, nearly 100% paved. The ground tunneled and developed many feet down over the entire island. That kind of devopment doesn't just disappear back into the earth...

Iraq? Japan? China? None of those places had "zero maintenance". They've all been dug up and preserved by devoted archeologists - many of them, in fact, were dug completely out of the ground, where they'd been swallowed up by the earth.

Manhattan? Last month's Discover (or the month before....) discussed this. Said that if humans completely disappeared from the earth, Manhattan would be entirely overgrown within 200 years. And I believe this. Walking on Staten Island, I've seen plants growing up through the asphalt when it had been left alone for only a decade or two. I've seen fences completely swallowed up by trees within three years. There's this street that's part of an urban experiment. No traffic, no people on it for the past few decades. It's a tiny sidestreet of forest. I have to take a picture one day so you can see what I mean. You can't see that it was a paved street less than 50 years ago!

And this is without major movements of the earth, or flooding, or huge wars which would devastate a lot of property before nature had a chance to get started. This is even without any real time.

2,000 years, no people? You wouldn't see clear patterned ruins, not like that.

I'd tell her that, but the conversation's moved on and I can't contact her privately. Tres annoying.

Huh. Is BSG set on earth? 'cause I can see another planet being less, er, enthusiastic and that accounting for it...

(yes, this is fanfic logic XD)

And pavement lasts hardly any time at all, really. Concrete sidewalks have to be replaced every decade or so, and asphalt, being so soft, isn't very durable. Plants can be incredibly destructive.

hrmmm... well, i thought the same thing, that the ruins looked too "maintained" knowing that alot of the truly abandoned ruins had been overgrown within years, and even some houses around here get overgrown within a few years back in the woods. what i chalked it off to was any one of four things:

1) the ecosystem is just springing back from the hinted at disaster which devastated the planet and hasnt yet quite had the time to cover everything.

2) the cylons might have recently excavated some of it as part of their plans

3) the gods may have had an influence on the ruins and kept them bare through divine interference so that they may be found

4) the writers/director were totally ignorant of this and are forcing us to deal with a liberty that they have taken, hence making us have to accept one of the previous theories.

As best I can tell, the new series (I say "as best I can tell," because I haven't had the opportunity to watch it, and I'm not sure I want to -- I'm attached to the old school version) does got a lot further in separating powers in the government than the old one did. Original Adama was military commander of the fleet, but also Caprica's representative and one of the most powerful voices on the governing Council of Twelve, and religious to the point that I'm pretty sure we see him standing in as a priest a few times (plus he gets all up in Satan's face when Satan gets a guest spot). If they've got it separated to the point even where Adama's just the military commander and someone else is holding down the political and spiritual angle, it's a lot more modernized than the old series.

Your boy there would probably pop an eyeball.

Interesting that you insult her logic when she brings up "church and state," yet you make the same mistake she did when you assume the environment on Kobol would be just as destructive to ancient ruins as the environment on Earth. If this is a completely different planet, why would the same rules apply?

Just asking. :)
