Really, I think it's a horrible way to die. However, if, as the comments indicate, this is very common, it raises an important question.

Why haven't we duckling-proofed our sewer grates yet?

Old meme. The pictures are real, not photoshopped as many people insist they are. However, the ducklings were rescued and reuinted with the mama duck. The photographer was not totally heartless.

And, from reading the comments, this sort of thing happens more often than one might expect, again leading to the question: where are the duckling-proof grates?

Plus, I'd find that an obnoxious thing for me to discover by cane. Of course, most blind people use a method that would prevent that from being a huge problem, but I compromise for support. But it'd also be a nuisance for someone in high heeled shoes.

Most grates I see are more grated than that.
