I see it as a natural outgrowth from political cartoons. Humor is often the only safe way to protest when things get really bad. Although these new comic commentaries seem to be trying to find a new path using less humor and saying look, pretty pictures. Anything with cute colors can't hurt.
I do like the form though other than the slight drawback that I can't read it. I don't think I'd ever be a comic politcal commentaryist... however you word it. But I am rather pleased with this strip: http://www.livejournal.com/users/sum/45883.html which was my reaction to some pharmacists refusing to sell women birth control pills because they claimed it caused them religious problems. (They can choose to be conscientious objecters and not become pharamcists, which is the correct course for those whose jobs and religions conflict.)
