That kid is good at conning "one last book" out of me. Several times. Probably because I bought her most of her books, and I want her to be a reader when she gets older, which means starting now. And I don't want to discourage her from reading (though that'd be hard to do, considering that "reading" a book is one of her favorite pastimes). Though on the other hand, making her beg and wheedle and be on her best behaviour for a book might just be the best way to guarantee she loves it.

I read this CNN article today, a mom said that her son can watch half an hour of TV if he reads for half an hour. My jaw just dropped. This is the most counterproductive thing I've ever heard in my life, and stupid too! She's teaching her kid that TV is better than books, and that books are something he has to suffer through in order to get a reward. Great lesson, mom. *dramatic eyeroll*

And Ana learned the monkey song. The one where you jump on the bed for a while, then fall over and (hopefully) get tickled? *huggles her anababy*

But don't you know? TV *is* better than books because you don't have to think about it! *rolleyes* (Reminds me of this dim ex-hallmate of mine who's taking Humanities with me. I kid you not, when the prof asked our first impressions of The Tempest, she raised her hand and immediately said that she hadn't expected to have to look at the notes. (Pardon my gratuitous use of italics, but it's how she spoke.)

That is SO cute! Isn't it wonderful when kids want to read? There's a pair across the street from me I babysit from time to time (one 3 and one 7) and I CANNOT get them away from the TV. It makes me so sad.

"I'll read you an adventure story!"
"No! I wanna watch Powerpuff Girls!"

Repeat ad nauseum.

I was limited to 2 hours of TV a week when I was little. I am so thankful.

Reminds me I should write up the stuff I've been meaning to on self-perception, minimal adequate punishment, and overrewarding. No better way to make someone not enjoy something than to turn it into a job for them.

Okay, so maybe killing a cute puppy in front of them every time they do it might also work, but we don't have studies on that.
