Why not? If he believes she is dead, why not take the money? If I were truly gone with no hope of revival, I wouldn't mind my lothario acceptung a million dollars to keep me hanging around and harmless. It'd make his life better, and it certainly wouldn't matter to me. And on the off chance that I'm not gone, well, then clearly it's beneficial.
Because right now it really looks like he only wants her dead so that he can get the inheritance. If he takes the money now, it'd be very much like admitting he's trying to get as rich as possible... and that million, undisputed, is sure to be more than he'd inherit.
*shrugs* And not taking it still makes it look like he only wants her money and her out of the picture so he can move on. People will think what they'll think regardless. Since he can't win, why not take the money and make her parents happy?
