I finally understand why, when Mario gets a leaf, he turns into a flying raccoon. (The short answer is that he doesn't.)

Oh, and I also now understand those really weird icons. I'm not so sure I *wanted* to understand those, but it's nice to know stuff.

Edit: More information is here. There was both a raccoon and a tanooki Mario in that game, but they were both based off of the same critter.

That explains why they called him "Tanooki Mario". I thought it was some fancy name for raccoons. :)

I learned his name (Tanuki) I think from one of the Mario strategy guides back in the day. I may have even read it in the little booklet that came with Mario 3, but don't quote me on that. ;)

I thought he was "Raccoon Mario" sometimes and only in one level (as it seemed to be transliterated at the time) "Tanooki Mario". Because he could either get the tail and stuff or he could get the "Tanooki Suit". Or maybe I'm confused.

I know this from by being Japanese...haha.
Foxes (kitsune) were known for similar powers, the raccoon rival even.
