Quite often, people want to post a link to a journal entry, or to a particular comment - but they get the wrong link. So I'm here to explain how to do it properly.

If you want to post a link to an actual entry, the URL will be in the following form: http://www.livejournal.com/users/conuly/587007.html

Notice how after the .html, everything stops. There's nothing after the .html part.

If you want to post a link to an entry inside a specific cut, the URL will look like this: http://www.livejournal.com/users/conuly/585395.html#cutid1

See the part of the URL that goes #cutid1? That tells us that we're inside a cut, and if we scroll up, we may see some more text.

Occasionally, you'll want to post a link to a comment or comment thread within an entry. After all, it's irritating to have to say "scroll down, scroll down", isn't it? Almost as irritating as clicking on a link to a journal entry, and having to scroll up to read the actual entry. The URL to view a comment will look something like this: http://www.livejournal.com/users/conuly/587675.html?thread=4231835#t4231835

See the part of the URL that starts with a question mark? You want to delete this when posting a direct URL to the entry itself.

But how, you ask, do I find the actual URL of the comment? Elementary! Go to your nearest comment thread. Each comment will have a set of links. By default, these say "link", "thread", and "parent". Mine say "Clicky!" instead of link, but that's because I'm cool. The link and thread links, as near as I can tell, take you to the exact same URL. The parent link will take you to the URL for the next comment up on the list. When you post a comment to an entry, you'll be taken to the page (with the URL) of that exact comment, not of the entry.

And yes, I know my use of URL and page was a bit confused there. Sowwee.

I would also add that if you want to provide a link to an entry, and also a specific comment, then use http://www.livejournal.com/users/conuly/587675.html?thread=4231835 - removing the #4231835. This means the page will open at the entry, but will then display only the desired comment thread. And I suppose you could theoretically add a #cutid1 to the end if you still wanted to go to a specific cut.

I must say - more than I hate scrolling to find the entry, I hate people who link to the reply page.
