I have a lot of junk, too...though I have gotten way better about it now that I actually have the *ability* to recycle (they have someone come get the stuff).
However, I packed my apartment pending eviction, bought a house, and moved in by myself without taking any time off work, so I basically threw everything in the garage and I desperately need to clean it.
But then, I had a friend move in, and when she moved out, she left a bunch of stuff. Including some shelves, which is useful, but I've still got to go through *MY* stuff to sort out what I want to keep and not.
With my schedule, the very idea is fucking ridiculous.
At least I gave away a BUNCH of clothes to charity. I just need to go through the rest of my stuff (in my copious amounts of spare time /sarcasm) and get it organized.
Fortunately, the vast majority of my house is, more or less, clean. Even if I do just pile all the bills into a drawer (or box or whatever) to sort through later, it's at least all in one central spot.
The thing that scares me is all that CORRUGATED in that house. Holycrap, corrugated burns *HOT*, and *FAST*. If, god forbid, someone ever drops a spark, that house is going up in flames.
That can probably be reported as a health hazard, and if the woman is lower middle class, she should sell some of that stuff, or take the books/magazines/whatever to Half-Price Books.
The child in question needs to buy her a cross-shredder, so some of the stuff can be shredded. Yes, identity theives WILL steal an identity from anyone they can, so the concern is valid, but there ARE ways around that.

She says her mom used to shred things, but stopped when it got to be too much. I suspect that any step now to shred documents will only increase the woman's anxiety... of course, I'm just assuming from what would happen to my mom in a similar situation.
