If you have to spam completely unrelated communities in order to promote your comm, maybe this is because your comm sucks and nobody wants to join it. Just sayin'.
Oh they are doing that now eh? I've had something different. People spamming my email. So now I've hidden it.(and yes I was using the lj one) The long distance relationship community owner did it or one of their mods. It turned me off the group and is the exact reason why I didn't join it. I knew of it before I got spammed but the spam was a turn off. People who spam on their communities are likely doing them more harm than good.

Too true.
Now, I admit I have used slightly less than kosher community promotion techniques in the past, but I didn't *spam*. I found some comms I would've been interested anyway, posted a general on topic post, and at the end mentioned "oh, by the way, I have this related community you may like to look into, but you don't have to". And I allowed comments. Always polite, I am.
Nothing wrong mentioning it if it is of relevance. But in the case of the person that contacted me. They were interest searching I think. Then they emailed everyone that had any sort of interest that might tie to their community. Not paying attention to those that said they were busy, etc. Also different for those people that have no relation to a community posting in it about another community unrelated. Unless say it's a promote a community community. *shrug* But you know what I mean. Then there are the obnoxious intrusion ones. Like say b&d started trying to draw people out of celibacy or vice a versa. Or someone into jokes picking on a specific group advertizing in the group of the type of people they poke fun at. :P Some really clueless spammers out there.
