Those poor Alaskan wild things. We do need to reduce our dependancy on foreign oil, but this isn't the way. How about finding alternative sources of energy?

I think this is one of those situations that could be handled delicately and appropriately (read: increased oil production + wildlife protection as well) or could become a nasty nepotistic mess. (I know "nepotism" isn't exactly the word I'm after, and neither is "good ol' boys", but I've been sick and not all my brain cells are firing.)

As I understand it, similar concerns were raised back a few years about the Alaskan Pipeline and its associated industry. In the end, the impact was much less than the dire predictions anticipated, and I've heard that some species even take advantage of the heating units on the Pipeline to nest and burrow in a slightly more clement temperature.
