I've got to get me to a bookstore....
Nov. 22nd, 2003 05:25 amAnyway, while trying to prove a now-forgotten point by browsing amazon.com, I came across some many very funny reader reviews I feel I must share
Beauty
OMG, this book is AWESOME! Beauty is a totally real character who knows what she'd doing. The writing is eloqent and the characters are well-rounded. The ending is GREAT, because it's so not like the Disney movie. I bought it awhile ago and LOVE it! The descriptions of the castle are wonderful. I can like and admire Beauty, something that's rare in fairy tale books. Buy this book! You won't be disappointed. It's a wonderful escape into a world you'll never forget!
P.S. I didn't tell about the plot 'cuz...well...come on. It's Beauty and the Beast. Plus, I like to find out for myself, don't you?
Okay. I'm glad you liked it. And you sound like a not too unintelligent person. But... what's with the valleygirlness?
I was sorely disappointed with this version of Beauty and the Beast. To be frank; I hated it. Disney's Beauty and the Beast is so good that it's hard to surpass that version.
You can certainly dislike the book, though I don't see why. But, word of advice? Don't compare books to Disney versions when you're trying to make a point. ANYBODY can surpass Disney's version.
Lyra's Oxford
This book is about witches and deamons. I read it before I allowed my daughter to read it. (I will not let her read it.) It is hard to read. I had to look up words in the dictionary for meaning. When I bought the book I thought it would be something interesting and true about Oxford, England. The book is short and only takes about a hour to read.
*dies giggling* Okay. So... your daughter isn't old enough to decide what she wants to read? When will she be, when she's voting age? If your daughter is a teenager, time to accept that. And of course it's hard to read, if you're so stupid that you think a book in the fantasy section is true. Didn't you at least read the description of the book before buying? That would've set you straight!
Tomorrow When the War Began
ADDED ON THE 14TH NOVEMBER 2003: I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW THAT JOHN MARSDEN HAS JUST RELEASED THE FIRST BOOK IN A NEW SERIES: THE ELLIE CHRONICLES, WHICH IS SET AFTER THE TOMORROW SERIES! I JUST BOUGHT THE FIRST BOOK "WHILE I LIVE". (I NOW HAVE NO MONEY LEFT) IT'S GOING TO BE AGONISING WAITING FOR THE REST OF THIS NEW SERIES...IT'S ONLY IN HARDCOVER SO FAR, AND THE BOOKSTORE SAID THEY HAD NO FUTURE RELEASE DATE FOR A PAPERBACK COPY
NOT FUNNY! I WANT! And I gotta wait because it's in Australia! Damn. Payback's a bitch, huh? Here I was laughing at them for waiting for movies, and I'm waiting for books!
Our family came across the Marsden series while traveling for several months in Australia. We listened to some of the books on tape and others we read individually. The stories were exciting enough to keep us interested, yet addressed teen topics well. As a mom, I did not have to fast forward through the mild sexual encounters. They discuss substance abuse, sex, safe sex, and other topics in a way that is accessible for teens.
The stories show a progression over time that is believable and captivating. I often think back to the main character and how she would deal with our new world order...
Anyway, I am buying the set for my nephew for Xmas. I highly recommend these for teens.
Also not funny. Ma'am, I applaud you for being openminded, etc. Some people *points up* aren't.
I was first introduced to this series at school, we were assigned to read it for English, before this book all books assigned to us in school were all garbage and I expected the same until it dawned on me that this book was actualy sounding o.k. When I got home i got my copy from the bookshelf and actualy started to read it, and I read at any chance I had, and when I finished I read the second and third and then had to wait while the rest were written and released
although it is listed as a young adult series, it will be unforgetable to all ages and you will develop a bond with Ellie, Homer, Kevin and the rest of the gang, I have never fell in love with any fictional charactors the way I did with these guys, not even in T.V series
Yep. That's Marsden. Better than TV. And another stereotypical teen is saved from a world of illiterate drudgery by a book which is NOT Harry Potter... though I cut out a lot of the bad spelling and runonandon sentences
Dealing with Dragons
...People who like adventure, mystery, and just reading should read this book. This book is set back in about the 1400's
No it's not. Nice try, but no. There were no dragons in the 1400s.
Alanna: The First Adventure
Arrrhhhhh!!! I really hate these books!! I stay up late in the wee hours of the night..... just so I can finish the next section! I'm crabby in the morning and all I want to do is read this dang book! I don't care about anything that's happening in the real world... I spend precious school hours pondering what happened in the book and whst will happen! I don't want a book to be more interesting than my life, but sadly.....I hate these books! By buying a copy of this book, you are commiting yourself to spend the rest of your free time reading about Alanna, the warrior woman and her life, and Tortall, and Jonathan, And George, and Myles, and Roger(grrr), and gary, and Theyet, and Burri, and George's mother and the king and and ...and... I can't beleive my life less interesting than a fantasy series! This is so pathetic...(me, not the novels)
*gigglesnorts* So true, so true. But it's better than staying up until the wee hours of the morning posting about this...
Heroine hops into bed with just about every male character, November 4, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from USA
Although I felt the storyline was pretty good for the four books in this series, I was very disappointed in the moral standards. As the heroine gains new skills and new experiences, becoming a superwoman, she fails to develop one of the most important qualities: self-respect. A lot of bed-hopping, little romance. A poor example for todays teens.
So, the only moral standard that counts is sexual? Okay, yeah, I can see that. Though it's interesting how three guys, one of whom she marries, become "every male character". Get a grip. Three guys over a not-insignificant stretch of time. In fact, I don't recall all that much sex. Yeah, it was there, but... not nearly as much as she makes it sound in this review.
Among the Hidden
...The book inspires hatred for the government, which has become tyranical to the extreme. The children blatantly disobey their parents and risk all of their lives, but the author makes it look like this is not wrong. I will certainly not include this book in our children's reading list. There are other books set in the future which offer similar subjects, such as "The Giver," and are better written. I have taught middle schoolers in public and private schools and would say that most kids this age do not have the understanding or discernment to deal with this subject matter.
So, we should love tyranny? We should obey our parents and value our lives more than freedom? And, I'm sorry, but when the author KILLS OFF a character, I'm not sure she's saying 'risking your life is a good thing!'. As it goes, The Giver *is* better written... but not for the reasons she saw fit to give.
The book I read is called Among The Hidden,it is written by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This book is about a boy named Luke. He is a shadow child, and he is illegal. There is a law that says people can not have more then two children, the third child is illegal and will be taken away from the parents if found. ... My parents always tell me to read a book. I'm playing with my brother and they say "Why don't you go read a book." I know they just want me to do well in school, but it is so annoying hearing them say it over and over and over again...I liked the book I just wanted to keep reading on and on and on. My favorite part was when Luke finally has the guts to go to Jen's house. I would like to change the whole thing I'd take out the parts about the Population Police and all the shadow children. Then the story would be happy.
*stares* This is supposed to be a review, not a book report. And, um.... no. Just no. *reads the last line again* And children aren't taken from their parents, they're killed. *frowns* But then, this is a kid, some charity. *cuts out most of the review*
I read this book as part of a graduate children's literature course, and found it to be (to me) offensively bad on two counts. First, I read a lot of science fiction, including "social" science fiction that speculates about the future of society rather than focusing on techology. This book makes a classic mistake: it changes one major thing in society yet "freezes" everything else where it is now, which is entirely unbelievable.
In this book, we are told that the main character was born a few years AFTER the population laws in the U.S. went into effect. The character is in his early teens. That means that assuming the laws got passed tomorrow, this book takes place some 15-20 years in the future. Yet the characters are still using Internet chat rooms in which they painstakingly type their messages to each other. Does anyone really believe we'll still be using this clumsy method, as opposed to virtual reality or a voice interface, 20 years from now?
Secondly, and worse, the book implies that ANY type of population control can ONLY be an evil plot by a corrupt government. We find out that the government faked reports of impending starvation in order to impose the overpopulation laws. Therefore, the government is wrong and the "third" children are unfairly oppressed. Most Americans simply will not acknowledge that the world is overpopulated, or will acknowledge it but say "it's not a problem here." Meanwhile, many of them continue to have more than two children, all the while complaining about how traffic has increased and areas have been overdeveloped. Therefore, the book gives the impression that overpopulation is not really occuring in this country or in the world, which in my opinion is exactly the wrong message to give.
1. Yes. I do believe in the future we will still be typing to each other. We've had the technology for voice transmission for a while, people don't use it. People change slowly, sorry. And typing isn't painstaking...
2. Um, no, are you aware that the birth rate in the US is slightly *under* replacement rate? The only reason we, unlike Europe and Japan, aren't having our own population crisis right now is because we have a high immigration rate.
This book was very well written and keeps you hooked. However, I was totally appalled at the subject matter in this book that was assigned to my 10 year old to read for school. They warn us continually to watch what we allow our children to watch on TV and see in other media, yet they turned around and assigned a book that at first looked innocent enough. The way it ended however left my son crying for over an hour until he fell asleep, worried that he may be taken from his family or killed. It is NOT the kind of book I ever would have allowed him to read had I known ahead of time how violent and callous it was. It has members of the government literally shooting children in cold blood, simply because their parents broke the 2 child limit law. It is subject matter appropriate for discussion at a high school level. It is NOT appropriate for younger children. It was presented to us as being part of a science fiction unit for the 5th grade literature class. In my opinion it has nothing to do with science fiction, it is a pure horror book and too violent for sensitive 10 year olds
Did I miss something? Am I the only one who read books with some violence when I was 10? Am I the only one who read history at all, and therefore knew that, wow, people get killed by evil governments like the Nazis?
Artemis Fowl
Okay this is about the stupidest book out there. First of all it seems as if the main character is the villian. Secondly the Faeries are little 'high-tech' fairies. Yes, Faeries are one thing, and fairies are another. Oh boy, could it get any more boring to read? Yes, when I started reading this I thought I could get past the boring beginning, but it went on until the end. It is not fantasy, it is not sci-fi, it is STUPID. This is more annoying than the 5th Harry Potter book! Which may I say, dishoners dragons and magic, and has a bratty teenager in it, muh like our friend Artemis with the latter. Artemis can dishoner its own things, like Faeries. And they have guns. Oh Cool! Magical little leprecauns with guns! This book is much safer closed. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition
It seems he's a villian? He IS a villian! How does that make this book stupid? And the technology, that's some sort of a problem? You're bringing up points which don't seem to support your argument... personally, those were what I liked about the book... Though no arguments on Harry Potter right now. And no, I'm not just picking on him because I disagree, I saw nothing wrong with the review above it, which had the same viewpoint
Goodnight, Mr Tom
I would recommend this book to anyone young or old wo wants to read an excellent book. I hope all who read this book enjoy it as much as I did.
If you liked it so much, why did you only give it two stars?
Zel
Oh my God. What are you people, popes? "Totally inappropriate things happen", yeah that's it. While things do transpire between the two after Konrad stumbles upon the tower after two years of endless searching, sex is not inappropriate for being included in the story. Take into consideration the fact that Konrad has been tormented with thoughts about Zel, this beautiful girl who enchanted him with her selflessness. Also look at Zel, who has been locked away in a tower for two years with only her mother to talk to for one hour every day. I mean, come on, would you want to be stuck talking to your mother when she's the reason your in a f****** tower in the first place? Zel longs, has always longed, to talk with people and see people. So if you were shut away from the world like Zel, wouldn't you be willing to sleep with the man of your dreams when he climbs suddenly through the window of your prison? It's satisfying to read that they get to share something so precious and meaningful.
The foreplay is presented as a series of similes anyway, and the actual putting of the you-know-what in the other you-know-what is indistinct. It's not written like a forward, sweaty, hot and heavy romance novel. It's beautifully described, haunting even. Completely appropriate.
So don't tie your panties in a knot, okay?
*dies laughing* Thank you! We needed that.
Zel started out as a good book that I couldn't put down. The story is about an almost 13 year old girl who meets a handsome count named Konrad. Zel's mother is afriad that Zel will chose to live without her and imprsions Zel in a tower, the reasons for this are a little unclear. As the story goes you learn that Zel's mother sold her soul to the devil in order get her daughter. It was hard to understand the Zel parts of the book when Zel was in the tower and some parts of the book were TOTALLY inappropriate. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
That's what he meant. Dear G-d! Of course her mother had sold her soul to the devil, she was a witch, what did you expect in a fairy tale like Rapunzel? That, oh, we were wrong, her mother never did a bad thing in her life?
This book wasn't very good. Not only was it graphic, but it was occult as well. The mother was a witch, and made a pact with the devil. This is definately NOT a book for children. I wouldn't recommend it at all. If you are looking for fairy tale retellings, try Robin McKinley's _Beauty_ or _Rose Daughter_ instead.
*screams until she's deaf* Of COURSE she was a witch and made a pact with the devil! That's how the story expletive GOES! You MORON! And it just wasn't all that graphic. Yes, we know they had sex, but that's not graphic. Graphic involves, like, details. Y'know? Moron.
This book was another version of Rupunzel and it did not impress me. I didn't like how her mother lied to her when she put her in the tower and told Zel that someone was tryng to kill her. And when Zel was in the tower she basically went crazy! I wouldn't really recommend this book to anyone, and hardly got throught it myself!
Yet another person who thought the wicked witch should be sunshine and light. Now, the mother in the book isn't that wicked... but she still had her pact with the devil to keep.
I have to say the story was good but some parts a little too much for young readers. The parts of her mother selling her soul to the devil should be erased completely! and (i hate to sound dowdy) when the prince finally climbs up to her and ...well she gets pregnant. To many graphic details that were inappropiate for I'd say under 6th grade
Because, after all, we didn't know that the story involves her having twins until we read the book, that was just added. And the wicked witch wasn't evil, nonono. *rolls her eyes loudly*
Bloomability
This book was definitly NOT one of the good books i have read. The book just keeps yammering on about Switzerland and some girl named Dinnie! I was forced to read this book for the 6th grade summer reading project. It was so boring i could only read 1 minute at a time! So dont waste your time and read a different book!
*sputters* Of course it does, you moron! It's ABOUT Dinnie! In Switzerland! What was it supposed to do, then, talk all about Jessica and Elizabeth in California?
This is an absolutely entralling book. Every bit is as good asthe bits before. Something is always happening, from cover to cover. Ican honestly say that 'The Ear, the Eye and the Arm' is one of the best books I have ever read
1. I agree 2. Okay, can you say something else about it? Something that doesn't apply to virtually anything? 3. Why is it here? Wrong book....
The Secret Garden
Perhaps only a gay man would notice how frequently the words "queer" or "queerest" appear throughout the text. If you are straight and you didn't notice - believe me it is used ad nauseum. Didn't they have proof readers back then?!
It was a common word back then. It didn't mean gay...
This book was a bad book because i`m a guy and it is a girl book after all. I mean it was a well written book, but i mean come on i`m a guy. You should have at least put in a little action or somethin so that i wouldn`t have been so bored. If you had done this then I wouldn`t be giving you such a horrible review. Mary is such a little girl who has no puirpose if you ask me. You should have made tthe main character a little more exciting, daring, and adventurous. I know that Martha speaks Yorkshire, but it was so confusing to try and interpret what she was trying to say and it made me just want to skip iover what she was saying. Iknow that you won`t liuke this review, but the book could have been more action packed. Thankyou!
You do know she's dead, right?
The history starts in the India. There was born a girl with the name Mary Lennox. Her parents died when she was a child and she went to live in England with her uncle, Mr. Archibald Craven and his son Colin. I recomend this book,it's fun and you are going to have a good time.
*wordless moans*
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
This book is about 4 young English boys that are send to another place because of the war, they were send to the professor house. There they found a new imaginary world inside a wardrobe. Narnia is the name of this world, and there is a witch that control everything so it is always winter but never Christmas. There is a lion called Aslan, he is coming to save Narnia. Aslan and the boys fight together to defeat this witch.
Yes, Lucy and Susan are traditional boy's names
If you like drama funny sad and axiting you shoud read narnia chronicles. They are the best books I have ever read ! I think you should read them!
What IS axiting? And I've never found the narnia books to be especially funny... sorry.
I GIVE THIS BOOK 5 STARS BECAUSE IS AND INTERESTING BOOK WHICH IS EASY AND FUN TO READ. I RECOMMEND IT FOR ANYONE WHO LIKES TO READ NON FICTION BOOKS. SPEACIALLY TO THOSE KIDS WHO LOVE READING TRUST ME I DON'T LIKE READING NON FICTION BOOKS, BUT I LIKED THIS ONE VERY MUCH!
Please tell me she doesn't know what nonfiction means...
This is already too long, so I'll stop there. Go read, it's worth a laugh or two. *frowns* Am I reviewing myself? Gah. It's taking over my mind! The reviews! The revieeeews!
