Yahoo is completely right here, the family is wrong. They claim he would have wanted them to have the email, but if that's the case he should have sent them the password. That's what I would do if I wanted my family to have access to any of my accounts in case of death. Which reminds me, I need to put my LJ password in a safe place so Jenn et al. can find it in case of a tragedy and tell youse guys what happened. If something happened.

Really, what's in his email that they think they need to see? For all they know, it could be full of porn, or snarky commentary on their political views, or (most likely) spam. None of this belongs to them.

I agree with you. If he really wanted his parent's to have acess to it he should have given them the password in case something happend to him.

....For me, it would really depend which family we're talking about here. If Ly and I could be legally married, and she could be recognized as my next-of-kin, then I'd have no problem whatsoever with her having access to my accounts if anything were to happen to me. But if I were to die before she can be recognized as my next-of-kin, there's no way I'd want my fucking parents to have access to that shit. Especially not my livejournal, since I speak freely on it and they don't even know it exists.

That's a really, really scary thought, actually. Makes me think that if I'm going to die of a fatal illness within the next few years, I'll feel like I have to purge everything so no one goes snooping. :/

I can understand the family wanting to see their son's "final words" or whatever... but the way the CBS newscaster carefully repeated the phrasing of their request (which I can't, of course, recall now)struck me at the time as "he's been talking to someone we don't approve of and we're going to try and blame him/her for distracting him thus killing him". I don't know why it twigged that way, but I really got the sense that it was somehow an effort to shift blame onto someone nowhere near the war zone.

Creepy.
