Martin reiterated that civil rights is not a popularity contest.

``You don't subject minority rights to a referendum,'' Cotler told the Toronto Star over the weekend. ``That's not what we do in Canada.''

Back at the veldt...

Meanwhile, in South Africa where the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that the current definition of marriage, excluding gays and lesbians, was unconstitutional (story), some churches are calling for the issue to be put to voters.

"The decision to legalize same-sex marriage cannot be left to the courts, as all South Africans, both now and in the future, will be affected by this decision," South African Christian Leadership Assembly (SACLA), said in a statement.

Legal experts expect the Constitutional Court, the highest in South Africa, to uphold the Supreme Court decision given past rulings in favor of gays and lesbians.

It will then be up to parliament to enact legalization to allow same-sex marriages. The government has not responded to the church call for a referendum.

South Africa? SOUTH AFRICA? Land of apartheid for an insane amount of time, and they're likely to legalize same-sex marriage while the US sits on its holier-than-thou ass?

What. The. FUCK?

for some reason, I have this...urge to laugh, crudely, at my own nation.

For we have been PWN'd by South Africa.

Jigga wha?

How long will it take until the US realizes how wrong it is? Until every other freaking country legalizes same-sex marriage?

Mind if I take this article and your comments and put it in my journal (and give you credit, of course)? I totally agree with your sentiments on South Africa.

I didn't know there was a name for this until watching the 2004 election results on ABC. "Gods, Gays and Guns," the man called it. When it comes to these issues, America is more like Nigeria or Saudi Arabia then they are like a western democracy (e.g. Canada or an EU state).

This is Google's top rated page (http://www.pnews.org/PhpWiki/index.php/GodGaysGuns), and I believe it shows the context of this issue quite well.

I'm going to plead autism here. I can sort of understand the whole "cold dead hand" gun issue. But for some reason another individual's choice in sexual partner seems to be the absolute worst reason to vote against one's own ecconomic interests.

Yes, South Africa has disgraced us. Too bad most of the GGG people probably can't find South Africa on a world map.

i have a funny feeling we have succeeded in relegating ourselves to an embarassing backwater republic. yeah we are still economically viable, but thats limited, and we might once again become the isolationist theocracy we were in the 19th century.

last measured IQ score, 128.

I guess that's neither clever enough or stupid enough for me to understand why the prevention of marriage betwixt sodomites is more imporant than providing quality healthcare to all citizens.

I'll have to find someone very clever or very stupid to explain it to me in a way I might be able to understand.

I believe this is part of Bush's campaing strategy, if not in those exact words.
