I keep wondering about family terms here in the USA, since I've noticed that some people on my flist casually use words that others regard as having a strong age-related stigma attached, and keep wondering why there's such a difference. Or why family behavior is so radically different in general from one region to the next, even within the same socioeconomic class... :)

I've always called my mom, Okaasann, and she's called me oniichann, or older brother, since I'm...the older brother between my syblings.
