To the man on the bus talking to his daughter about what color she was going to paint his nails when they got home: Good job! You get a gold star and a cookie, which you will probably share with your kid! Cookies all around, no sarcasm!

To the man in CVS playing on his phone while his wife corralled their two year old and talked to the pharmacist: Dude, if you're not gonna help, just stay home.

This tangentially connects to one of my favorite poems, which I was recently reminded of.

I've been using that C to F converter for years. It helps that I memorized the relevant subway stops just from taking that train so often.

I think I'm converting more often in the other direction: the Fahrenheit of my local weather report to centigrade, when I'm talking to my non-American friends.

I tend to use "Thirty's hot, twenty's nice, ten is chilly, zero's ice" to remind myself, but I have basically got those memorized. 86, 68, 50, 32. Outside that I do the math, but usually all I need is the ballpark.
