So, the victim has a flashback episode in which, among other things, he spends several years being a doorman for a secret casino under the building. He is, as near as I can tell, their only employee. He's certainly the only one leading guests to the secret casino.
And we get to see the scene in which he Realizes His Boss Is Bad, and I was so underwhelmed. Because here it is:
He goes to the dude on the regular scheduled Casino Day and says "Oh, it's my anniversary, I promised my wife I'd get home early today" and his mob boss boss says "Wtf, no". And then gives him a bigger tip than usual later.
And we're supposed to see this as his mob boss boss being a dick I guess, but c'mon, your ordinary non-criminal boss wouldn't be too thrilled with you either if you pulled this on them last minute. It seems obvious to me that you can't just bounce from your job with no coverage and no advance warning unless something urgent happened, and "it's my anniversary" is not something urgent.
Iffy writing choices, please do better.
I actually have a similar thought about the most recent episode I watched of Young Sherlock, in which we find out that his mother really has been being recorded at the asylum. Not to say that the mentally ill don't deserve privacy, and the many many many transcripts are certainly worrying - but E and I were both a bit nonplussed at how extremely shocking everybody seems to have found it. It's the least shocking part of the place, honestly. (She's also been getting old-timey shock treatments. That's definitely worse, but also to be expected in that setting.)
