(I have questions about this timeline, though. 15 years ago this dude was a relative nobody and he went to prison, and then once he broke out of prison about two years ago he had a meteoric rise and now he's running news networks? Also, is his organization providing quasi-governmental services and if so, what are they? Also also, and quite seriously, who the hell was founding all those colonies that couldn't support themselves? The whole point of a planet is that you can produce enough food! If your planet cannot grow enough food, go settle one that can!)

His mom was clearly using him in her thefts this whole time. And no judgment, maybe she had no choice - but c'mon, let's not pretend that this was her one and only theft.
