I feel your pain. We're nursing our 26 plus year refrigerator so we have big expense looming too. At least we got a lot of mileage out of it.

At one time our utility had a program where they would actually provide a new fridge if your old one was old enough. I remember checking ours (which had come with the house) and it was from 1988 - this was about 2016. We didn't end up using the free fridge program, but I went around telling people about it because it really was a good deal if you were okay with the fairly barebones fridge you could get.

Depends on how its busted and the make/model and year. Sometimes, it's an easy fix. On mine, we lost the pump 6 years back. It was a "plug and play" model and if I had known that in advance, I could have swapped it out myself rather than pay the $150 fee (on top of the cost of the part) to have a repairman come out to do it. HE leaned the washer machine back 45 degrees, asked me to hold it in place. He reached down, quarter-twist to pop the old unit off (and one small wire plug). Then did that in reverse with the new unit. All fixed in under 10 minutes. The pump was $180, so, $330 total. You look at what a new washer costs and that was the better option in our case. There are enough step-by-step do-it-yourself videos out there that I'm surprised there are any repair people left.
