How much ground could a groundhog hog if a groundhog could hog ground?

My mother used to have a powerful dislike of groundhogs. Late in summer they'd come up under our apple tree and eat "her" apples. Of course, since they were already on the ground, the apples were probably already half rotten, but she couldn't take seeing the little guys standing there, bold as brass, munching "her" apples. If a deer came out of the woods and started munching on ripe apples still on the tree, well, that was cute. Genuine double standard!
