I've never gotten a harsh rejection, just a generic "no thanks" or ghosting. Hiring managers don't have that kind of time.

yup, I am a hiring manager and I can confirm, I don't have that kind of time. candidates that aren't a fit get a polite "thanks but no thanks", people we bring in to interview get a polite rejection if we go with someone else, but I defo don't send "lol how could you even THINK about applying to this job?!" to people.

yeah, anxiety is a jerk. but you will be fine!

as I tell my students when applying: 9 times out of 10, you won't hear anything, but 0/10 will someone be an asshole to you for no reason. (They'd lose their job, if nothing else, and people inclined to be assholes usually have at least some modicum of self-awareness if they've managed to get to the point where they're hiring others.)
