Namely: When did we all decide we couldn't agree on how to spell Zelensky? Apparently right from the start, so why haven't I noticed until now?

As someone who actually has a degree in Slavic Languages, I can reassure you that there are several valid ways to spell it in English. We don't have unique ways to represent all the Ukrainian vowels. The most academically accurate is "Zelenskyy" with two y's, "Zelensky" is probably how he'd spell it if he lived here (so you are fine), and "Zelenskiy" might seem Russian instead of Ukrainian for really picky Ukrainians, but for us it represents the same sounds in a way we are more familiar with and is less likely to cause weird pronunciation mistakes by Americans than "Zelenskyy." Yes, even "Zelenskyi" is possible, I but personally wouldn't spell it that way. BTW, it basically means 'Green.'
