Date: 2025-02-20 07:31 am (UTC)Hmmm. I have no way to prove this, but I suspect that that's basically an indicator of what's trending on social media where. People don't look up words they know and are familiar with. The look up words they hear and are unclear on. That's certainly why people were looking up "gaslighting" in the US in late 2024. I hypothesize that we could characterize this map as showing what concept each country was wrestling with most at the time the data was from.
Like, I'm pretty sure most people in Latin America know what "resiliencia" means in the usual literal conventional sense and would not need to look it up, but I bet it became a buzzword of some political or social significance. Likewise, Nigerians know what "love" means, so it seems likely some social phenomenon involving the word is unfolding there. If Zimbabwe is googling "presumptive tax", they aren't doing it from idle curiosity: they are confronting one. (Putting "presumptive tax Zimbabwe" into Google autocompletes "2024 pdf download".) I'm guessing one can track the progress of Jools LeBron's video (and allusions to it) around the world by searches for the definition of "demure".

But no, yeah, your comment sums up what's obviously going on, because most people aren't me and aren't looking up "take" just to see the etymology and if there's any weird niche usages they might be unfamiliar with.
