It's not on our block, and it seemed that there was a small but very real pause between the shake and the boom. But no sirens, so I guess it was just construction?

There can be some hellishly big bangs from construction stuff, so it's probably that.

If the shake came before the boom (and both had the same cause), that would be consistent with something hitting the ground. Per https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/sound-speed-solids-d_713.html, sound travels much fasted in some solids, including concrete, than in the air.
