I'm curious, why do you have to register to vote in the US? I was just automatically allowed to vote once I was old enough...

That way you can't vote more than once in any given election.

Well, I can't vote more than once either. ;-) Maybe I just phrased my question badly... I'm just surprised that they don't already have all the necessary information about you to just tick you off their list when you go vote.

Right. The system was set up long before the dawn of computers. Also, people in this country are notoriously against the government having more information than absolutely necessary.
