Subscriptions are anonymous. Authors can't see who's subscribed to their fic, they don't get notified when someone subscribes, and thus I conclude that they don't get notified about an unsubscription (and if they did, at worst it would be anonymous).

ETA: But while I can't prove that I've never been unsubscribed from in the 10 years I've had fic on AO3, I find it unlikely that I haven't, and also that although I'm never notified when my subscription numbers go up, I would be notified if they went down. Both of those defy belief alone, never mind in combination. So you're safe, is my conclusion.

Oh, I don't care about anonymity - I use a very different pseud there than I do elsewhere because, uh, privacy.

Gotcha. Well, I unsubscribe blithely from fandoms I'm not in anymore, and I assume other people do too, but even if your author is the kind to take it as a personal criticism, I can tell you that I've never gotten a notification about subscriptions or unsubscriptions in 10 years, and I don't see where to enable those notifications. So I still think you're safe.

Okay, great, I will go and unsubscribe without a lingering feeling of unease.

Authors don't get notified when readers subscribe or unsubscribe. However, we do see the total number of user subscriptions, and also how many readers are subscribed to individual fics, in our Statistics. Those numbers will go up or down, but we never see names.

(I must've had so many unsubscriptions, just from "readers subscribed to a multichapter WIP and now it's complete" alone. No idea who, or when, or how many.)

No. I have had people unsubscribe from my fics (because I told them to) and I did not get a notification.
