So, I don't hand out stuff for halloween

but someone I know hands out kid-appropriate halloween/scary/horror themed books, which is a big hit

(they group their books into age groups)

We don't hand stuff out either, but we used to hand out comic books (also age-sorted).

Plastic toys, usually. I had some creepy crawlies for a couple of years, and then last year had creature rings (spiders, mostly). This year I'll put out some Play Doh too, for the littlest ones. (I need to swing by Target and check their assortments.)

Note that this is all stuff that I put out on a try, on the front walk, for no-contact distribution. There's no way to hand stuff through the screen door, and between the big friendly dog and the three escape artist cats, opening the door again and again just doesn't work. No candy, because squirrels etc. (Past residences had airlocked front doors, mostly, and only creatures that avoided the front door.)

I never thought of juice boxes, though! Just candy. And small, not-candy things (for the allergic).

I used to hand out candies, but the left-overs tended to go to my mother, as I'm not big on candies. Now I buy a pack of mini-Snickers or mini-Twix (do you guys have Twix? I'm pretty sure you have Snickers).

Twix are the best: cookie, caramel, chocolate! Sad to say that around my area the bags of them are often stale (the chocolate has bloom) and I don't like handing out less than perfect candy!

Jiuce boxes! Brilliant!

This year I'm handing out picture candy from Lofty Pursuits because I am a weirdo. But next year I'm definitely handing out juice boxes.

I'm thinking of getting the full-sized candy bars this year - we're inside a townhouse complex and rarely get more than 32 trick-or-treaters, which is the number of full-sized bars in a package at BJ's.

I hand out the Halloween-sized candy bars. I'll usually start with handing out one per child for the earlier kids (who are usually smaller), then increase to a couple per child as the evening wears on. My goal is to have all of it gone by the end of the evening.

That's especially true now, since I'm pretty much not eating candy at all for health reasons. I did consider either getting something non-candy to give out or just keeping my lights off, but I don't find the candy particularly tempting, so I figured I would just carry on as usual.

Snack-size KitKats and Reese's Cups. As we only see one or two trick-or-treaters in a good year, we want to make sure what we have on hand we'll like to eat afterward.

Ever heard the old tall tale about the old man who complained how soft today's kids are and that when he was a youth, he had to hike 5 miles to school, uphill both ways? I bought his house. I'm on a dead-end street at the top of a hill with three other houses. You got to go down the hill, over one street and back up the hill to get out of the neighborhood. There aren't many kids willing to climb that hill for 4 lights. And I'm not the top. My across the street neighbor's house looks out over my roof. That roof is a little over two stories at the front door/street level.

Younger bro on the other hand sees 400 on a slow year up in his neighborhood ('80's era development and level). He hands out small bags with mixed candy in them. He's also the scoutmaster in that town. If you prove you're a scout under the costume, you get an extra bag filled with scout stuff (patches, etc.).

I thought I ordered an extra half-dozen monster-head jellybean packets from Jelly Belly, but what they sent me are a half-dozen much larger bags of "monster mash" jelly beans (fruit flavors), so a few kids are going to get very lucky indeed! I will be handing out as many as possible of the normal sized treat packets though. And some Reese's cups and candy corn mini packs.

Same here, sometimes you get a lot of kids, and other times you get almost none. :)

I currently do not hand out anything due to a geriatric dog whose heart would not handle the constant excitement of the doorbell ringing and/or people arriving all the time.

That being said, when I did hand out things, I usually give out non-food items. This comes from the fact that as a child I had very bad allergies and 96% of what I got I had to give away because I would react badly. I remember the hurt of that, so I give out toys, bubble wands, pencils, stickers, and other non-food items.

They are safe for all and the bonus is - if I do not give all away, they keep for the following year.
