I need to get Halloween candy
Nov. 1st, 2024 02:55 amOr else order glow sticks like I have before, but I'm thinking about what we'd like left over. One year a neighbor gave out juice boxes, those were a big hit. What do you all hand out?

Date: 2024-10-26 08:49 am (UTC)Note that this is all stuff that I put out on a try, on the front walk, for no-contact distribution. There's no way to hand stuff through the screen door, and between the big friendly dog and the three escape artist cats, opening the door again and again just doesn't work. No candy, because squirrels etc. (Past residences had airlocked front doors, mostly, and only creatures that avoided the front door.)

Date: 2024-10-26 03:42 pm (UTC)Jiuce boxes! Brilliant!
This year I'm handing out picture candy from Lofty Pursuits because I am a weirdo. But next year I'm definitely handing out juice boxes.

Date: 2024-10-26 04:52 pm (UTC)That's especially true now, since I'm pretty much not eating candy at all for health reasons. I did consider either getting something non-candy to give out or just keeping my lights off, but I don't find the candy particularly tempting, so I figured I would just carry on as usual.

Date: 2024-10-26 07:05 pm (UTC)Ever heard the old tall tale about the old man who complained how soft today's kids are and that when he was a youth, he had to hike 5 miles to school, uphill both ways? I bought his house. I'm on a dead-end street at the top of a hill with three other houses. You got to go down the hill, over one street and back up the hill to get out of the neighborhood. There aren't many kids willing to climb that hill for 4 lights. And I'm not the top. My across the street neighbor's house looks out over my roof. That roof is a little over two stories at the front door/street level.
Younger bro on the other hand sees 400 on a slow year up in his neighborhood ('80's era development and level). He hands out small bags with mixed candy in them. He's also the scoutmaster in that town. If you prove you're a scout under the costume, you get an extra bag filled with scout stuff (patches, etc.).

Date: 2024-10-29 05:20 pm (UTC)That being said, when I did hand out things, I usually give out non-food items. This comes from the fact that as a child I had very bad allergies and 96% of what I got I had to give away because I would react badly. I remember the hurt of that, so I give out toys, bubble wands, pencils, stickers, and other non-food items.
They are safe for all and the bonus is - if I do not give all away, they keep for the following year.
