I think I read Derkholm as a kid (is one of the characters named Kit??) and remember being so weirded out by the worldbuilding!

Yeah, one of them is Kit, whose parents have never been inside his bedroom.

Keep in mind Derk used some of his own genetic material in making the griffins, that's why they are his children.
