and we also have a packet of forget-me-nots to plant over his ashes when they come back in the mail.

So honestly, I feel good about recommending Paws at Peace to anybody in their service area. Which includes Staten Island (for an additional $95 fee). The place everybody else recommended does not include Staten Island, and that's kinda the story of your life if you live on Staten Island so....

I don't need more compassionate and sympathetic replies, though I definitely appreciated all of them :) And I still miss him but... I miss him like he was. We were just so blindsided by how rapid that decline turned out to be, less a gentle slope than a steep cliff that he just... leapt right off.

I'm glad the service was good to you!

I can relate - I felt much the same way about Olivier. he was going along (mostly) ok, then all of a sudden *bam!* he fell off a cliff and a couple days later I said goodbye.

I know how you feel

When Oscar would snatch up a hotdog and then just hold it in his mouth, I knew there was no coming back. He was not going to walk ever again, he couldn't even swallow a hot dog.
I actually took him to the vet but it was a promise I made a long time ago. When we first got him, he spent 2 weeks there while we looked for his owners. He loved that place and was excited every time we went. He loved everyone and was loved back. I got 2 sympathy cards in the mail because all the signatures would not fit on one.
Gosh, forget-me-nots. That is so darn nice!! Do you have a place picked out?

Our vet does forget-me-knots and a signed card, it's a lovely gesture.

A pet who loved the vet's office and was excited to go there? Wow... most of ours have started trembling when we got within two blocks of the place.

We've had five dogs euthanized over the past 25 years, mostly with house calls (the vet is about a quarter of a mile from our home). We got a sympathy card with LOTS of signatures for one of them, the one who had been going there every week in his last few months to get his Fentanyl patch replaced (since they didn't want us handling that stuff).

Vets who do this job are honestly some of the best people in the world.

I'm glad you had a service you can recommend to others. Those kinds of situations ate stressful, even when planned out, and so entities that can treat it with care and compassion are wonderful.
