"What's Jim Crow mean? I don't get it. Who's Jim Crow?"

In other news, I tried to slap her hand today when she yelled. That's what she does to Seth (sometimes), and I had figured that what's good for the gozling is good for the goose. Apparently I was wrong. Damn inconsistent rules!

I know perfectly well who Jim Crow was (or would've been). In fact, I even know that the song "Jim Crow" has the same melody as "Turkey in the Straw". Lizziey was the ignorant one. But thanks for helping anyway.

"Jim Crow" was the archetypical southern Black man in post-Civil War US. The term was mostly used to describe laws that were designed to limit the civil righhts or ability to vote of black people post-Civil War America.

I don't who Jim Crow was or if there was a Jim Crow, but "Jim Crow laws" refer to segregationist laws and Southern mistreatment of blacks before the Civil Rights movement. (Crow = black, I'm pretty sure it was a generic term to refer to a black man).

Oh, okay, I thought there wasn't a real Jim Crow, but I wasn't sure (see below).

And it occurs to me now that I look at it again, that Connie wasn't asking, she was quoting Lizziey...

Yeah, Jim Crow. I know he was in this one show where he played a cartoonist, but he really rose to fame from being in the sketch commedy show "In Living Color." Then, he went on to make lots of movies, using his trademarked facial flexability and knack for physical comedy.

Some people think he's an overpayed ham. Some people think he's the best thing since Chaplin. Either way, people keep paying to see his movies.

I think it's totally cool that a little girl doesn't know about Jim Crow.

I think it's totally uncool that most high school students don't know about Jim Crow.

I want this stuff to be taught in schools. I want it to have to be taught in schools.

Well, I didn't know who Jim Crow was, either (unsurprisingly), so I'm glad people explained it in the comments. Your journal can be so educational!
