Which is a moderate annoyance, and not made better by a weird oversight I discovered with efiling.

Presumably you can write in whatever you like, but when efiling the choices for your dependent are in a drop-down which includes son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, and so on. There's no option for "child" or for "stepdaughter" or "stepson" which... I mean... look, even if I knew nothing at all about nonbinary people it'd still irk me that this is uneven.

They might catch up to the rest of the world eventually but I worked with bureaucracy, and I wouldn't hold my breath. It's not so much narrow minds as the way even changes bureaucracy wants comes at a glacial pace...

I'm on hold 'cause wife has inherited company stock. If the dividend form came in when it was supposed to, we either never received it or it got lost. She hasn't had time, yet, to look-up her login info to download a copy. And then she wonders why I try to start our taxes early. Ours are complicated as she's an ordained minister working as a hospital chaplain. The hospital in question pay her like a church would pay their minister so the IRS treats it as self-employment with a twist. Real "fun".

I am right there with you...the unevenness of that would irk me too! Not least because it diminishes the importance of the "stepchild" and the "foster child" in comparison to the "son" and "daughter".
