but what I didn't have the money to get is a separate container so they're still in the bag. That'll have to be a next week purchase. I should label the containers. If I color code them then other people can fill the feeders for me if I'm indisposed. They probably won't, but I can dream.
In other news, I usually coat the birdseed with chili oil to deter rodents from eating what's on the ground. But after I made the suet I had some seed left over and I said "Meh, it's not that much, I'll put it out as is". Now, the squirrels can't get to the feeders in the back, on the crape myrtle. I watched on intrepid squirrel try the other day, as it realized that it could get much more suet from the feeder than it could by waiting for scraps to drop on its head, but it decided partway down the branch that the branch is alarmingly unable to support its weight and ran back. It then proceeded to try seemingly every other branch on the crape myrtle before giving up!
But the feeder in the front, the squirrels can get to, and this is why I don't have a suet feeder in the front. So today I went out to get myself a soda and when I came back there was a squirrel carefully dangling over the feeder by the back toes, cramming seed into its mouth!
It was adorable. Super adorable. I do like squirrels an awful lot. If it were just squirrels I wouldn't bother with rodent deterrent. Actually, I usually put out a lot less food in the front than I do in the back because I can't watch the birds as easily. I may get a third container that's not coated in the hot stuff just for the squirrels as well as the birds, entertain the neighbors. There's not any wastage on the ground, in the front, so less worries about other rodents that those same neighbors might not like.
