This time hanging out at the tippy top of the crape myrtle. One of them may be different from the ones I've seen before, and the other certainly is - it had black bars on its wings. Also, they both appeared a bit more yellow than the others I've seen, but I can't be sure. Still very small, though.

The post adjacent to yours had a photo of goldfinches. I think you had ruled those out, but I still thought it was a funny coincidence.

The black bars on the wings are an important distinguisher among species (although it cuts things down to "this half of the several dozen possible species rather than that half"). Also look at the pattern of longitudinal stripes on the head: they almost all have some kind of stripes, but varying in color and conspicuousness.
