Nam presbyteri bini uel terni, similiter et diacones, singulis diebus uices habent simul cum monazontes, qui cata singulos ymnos uel antiphonas orationes dicunt.

Now that your kindness can know, the way the order of services passes daily in holy places, I ought to make sure to you, I know that you will be glad to know these things. For instance, every day before the song of the rooster (cockcrow) all the doors of the Anastasis are opened and the monks and nuns, as they are called here, descend, and they are not alone, but they also have laypeople besides, men or women, who nevertheless wish to have an early vigil. And from that time right on until day hymns are sung and psalms are responded (this makes very little sense, help?), and similarly antiphons: and after each hymn is made a prayer. For the priests take it in twos and threes every day, together with the monks, and together with the deacons, to say prayers after every hymn or antiphon.

But when it is dawn, then they begin to sing the matin hymns. Here both the bishop arrives with the clergy and at once walks into the cave and from inside the rails first says a prayer for all; actually recalling those famous names, whom he wishes to call, so he blesses the cathecuminos. Also he says a prayer and blesses the faithful. And after the bishop exists from within the rails all the people come to his hand, and he blesses them one by one as he exits, and there comes the dismissal, it now being daylight.

Item hora sexta denuo descendent omnes similiter ad Anastasim et dicuntur pasalmi et antiphonae, donec commenetur episcopus; similiter descendet et non sedet, sed statim intrat intra cancellos intra Anastasim, id est intra speluncam, ubi et mature, et inde simliter primum facit orationem, sic benedicet fideles, et sic exiens de intro cancellos similiter ei ad manum acceditur. Ita ergo et hora nona fit sicuti et ad sexta.

Likewise, in the sixth hour they all descend into the Anastasis again, and psalms and antiphons are said, while the priest is being given the signal; he descends as before and does not sit, but he enters at once within the rails in the Anastasis, it is in the cave, like in the morning, and then first says a prayer, then blesses the faithful, and as he exits from the rails everybody approaches his hand. Thus it is done in the ninth hour just as in the sixth.

Et diacono dicente singulorum nomina semper pisinni plurimi stant respondentes semper: kyrie eleyson (quod dicimus nos: miserere, Domine), quorum uoces infinitae sunt.

Et at ubi diaconus perdixerit omnia, quae dicere habet, dicet orationem primum episcopus et orat pro omnibus; et sic orant omnes, tam fideles quam et cathecumini simul. Item mittet uocem diaconus, ut unusquisque, quomodo stat, cathecuminus inclinet caput; et sic dicet episcopus stans benedictionem super cathecuminos. Item fit oratio et denuo mittet diaconus uocem et commonet, ut unusquisque stans fidelium inclinent capita sua; item benedicet fideles episcopus et sic fit missa Anastasi. Et incipient episcopo ad manum accedere singuli.


Also at the tenth hour, which here is called licinicon, that we call lucernare, all the people assemble at the Anastasis in the same way, and all the tapers and candles are lit, and it makes an endless light. Also, the light is not produced from outside, but from inside the cave, where night and day the lamp is shining, it is inside the railing. (I have no idea about this sentence. It looks like there's an extra and, and it's throwing me off). Then the bishop is called and descends and sits on high, also the priests sit in their places, and hymns and antiphones are said.(Something,something), the bishop gets up and stands before the rails, it is in front of the cave, and one of the deacons makes the commemoration of people one by one, just as he has been accustomed to. And as the deacon says each name, the little boys who are always standing by, and whose voices are countless, reply "kyrie elieson" (which we say miserere Domine).

And when the deacon has finished saying everything he is going to say, the biship first says a prayer and prays for everyone; and so they all pray, faithful and cathecumens together. Also, the deacon sends his voice so that all of the cathecumens should incline his head, just as he stands; and then the bishop stands and says a prayer over the cathecumens. Again prayer is made, and again the deacon sends his voice and (something), so that each one of the faithful should incline his head where he stands; then the biship blesses the faithful and the dismissal takes place at the Anastasis. And they begin to approache the bishop's hand one by one.
