Somebody elsewhere linked to a twitter thread about terrorist aims. That thread immediately devolved into islamophobia in the responses, and probably anti-semitism as well, though I didn't scroll down to confirm that. So I closed it and that's why I haven't linked to it, but what the main part of the thread said is that terrorist organizations do extra extreme things in order to provoke a dire overreaction, which will get them new recruits and also allow them to further paint those other people - in this case, the Israeli government and military - as illegitimate.
Makes as much sense as anything else to me, and certainly would explain Hamas' behavior, which otherwise is a bit confusing. I mean, unless they were trying to start this war I don't know why they'd have taken quite those precise measures, but if they *were* trying to start this war then they've definitely succeeded in that ambition! That's not a compliment. What sort of jackass tries to start a war that'll only hurt innocents?
