If the Atlantic conveyer aka Gulf stream, stalls out, or even weakens as it is already, then that means the prevalent current sea conditions in the Gulf will become the new normal... and that means Idalia is just going to be the first of a whole lot of very nasty hurricanes tracking over the Southern US.

It's a little ironic that the states with the highest proportion of Climate Change deniers, is about to become the latest victims of it.

Iiiiiii don't think that's irony. That's just causality. If everyone who believes a state is going to drown because of global warming leaves that state, the only people left to drown are those who didn't believe it would happen.

With that storm hitting California, there were definitely people whose had no idea what to do about a hurricane, their disaster prep was for wildfires and earthquakes. With this, I worry that people will be thinking "yeah, another hurricane *shrug."

And that's fine if it means they already have things like battery-oiwered lanterns, and not if it's "I'm fine after the last two, I'm not going to worry" or refusing to evacuate because this doesn't look as bad as their memory of hurricane Andrew.

And I suspect some people will be out there in the storm, feeling macho or independent because they're not letting the impersonal forces of the universe scare them.

It actually hit an area that hadn't had a hurricane in 100 years, Cedar Island and the Northern portion of the Florida Gulf. Usually hurricanes hit Southern Florida or Eastern Florida.
