the tooth has got to go. Going on antibiotics this week, extraction next week. The, uh, the dentist was worried that if the painkillers didn't take I might react... badly.

This is not really a surprise. The wisdom tooth is wedged right in there, but for some reason it's always been the adult tooth next to the wisdom that had all the problems. One or the other had to go sooner or later anyway.

Would have been good if they'd caught this at your prior visit, but at least now there's a road to recovery mapped out.

Yeah, it would've, but it's not that shocking either. This tooth has had ongoing issues of the sort that better dental hygiene really couldn't fix.

I am so sorry to hear that! I have had extractions (my jaw was too small to not only accommodate my wisdom teeth, but I had to have another on every side extracted as well because of no space). I've been informed by my dentist I have the jaw of a child. (sigh)

Once the inflammation improves from the antibiotic it shouldn't be too bad. Extractions have not been an issue for me.

Remembering when I had all four "wisdom" teeth pulled. Wasn't fun.

I remember my dentist showing me an X-ray in which two wisdom teeth were growing at right angles to the adjacent molars. There was no question in my mind that they had to be removed. Fortunately, the other two wisdom teeth didn't exist at all.

I required five surgeries to remove my four wisdom teeth. It wasn't a lot of fun. Five because they went after the last, sedated me, and decided it wasn't in a good enough position to remove and I should come back in six months.
