The Duke draws the King, the challenger intones "Behold the Ace!" so the Duke is then legally dead (a legal ghost) and must be ignored in public (great chance to upstage the rest of the cast).
After eating many sausage rolls, someone reads the actual law. Duke is legally alive, guy gets to marry the girl, etc.
It went out of fashion as Germany became not so popular...
