The first year we had them in Philly they were absolutely everywhere, and now it's calmed down a lot -- you still see them, but they aren't overwhelming like they were. I'm not sure if that means suppression attempts have been successful, or if they just got bored and moved on to terrorize other places.

You might at some point see some invasive giant preying mantises that do -- I found one in my backyard a couple years ago -- but I don't think they're the only thing that eats them back home.

I am pretty sure that the instructions to smash them on sight are largely because people want to feel like they can DO something about them, and that's a thing they can DO.

Lions in the zoo live about as long as domesticated cats at home and have a lot of the same health problems. That is pretty cool! Now I wish I'd taught my old kitty to open his mouth on command for tooth inspections. :-D
