I generally forget that, because the waterfront by us is all built up with warehouses and shit, and there's no beach. Which is a pity, because I've walked along there before and if there was a beach there we would have some fucking amazing views, let me tell you. You can actually see the Manhattan skyline AND the Verrazzano from there, and it's only about 10 minutes from my house at a slow amble.

But, as I said, there is no beach and so I usually forget how close we are to the water except on evenings like this, when it's hot and humid and not much of a breeze and then - whew! You can smell that air! It's like suddenly being slapped in the face with a fish. I was not expecting that when I walked the dogs tonight, but clearly I should have been.

That smell sounds not fun.

Where I live on certain days you can smell the feed yards from up to 40 miles away. Apparently it's the smell of money. So the beef people say. ;/

Did you ever get that "maple syrup" smell, or were you not in the NYC area in 2005? That was soooooo strange. (See, e.g., https://web.archive.org/web/20190109155834/http://gothamist.com/2005/10/28/maple_sugar_smell_mystery.php - the wikipedia article takes all the mystery out of it.)
