It's yet another example of folks who have only *heard* a phrase, never *read* it.

Like "next store" or "honing in"

That form could be useful if you wanted something in-between “behind” and “beside”. Like when one horse overtakes another in a race.

"close be-hide" for "close behind"

A deep-seeded dilemna for sure :/

I actually pronounce it this way ("next store") as that's what I heard when people said it around me as I was growing up.

Funny you should say that...

I was thinking about just this thing when I edited it - like, is it a good idea to spell out my sarcasm because of say, stereotypes around my education or lack thereof, or because no one will get it if I don't, people will just generally think I don't know how certain phrases are worded and/or how to spell?

And if it's the latter, what presumptions do I seem to be making about the intelligence of my/our readership? That they're not smart enough to see that I a) I misworded and/or misspelled anything up there or b) that they *are* smart enough to see it but not smart enough to know I did it on purpose?

And all of this is why I hate seeing others use or using the s/ tag myself, The End.

Well, if the intended sarcasm comes off as malicious then yeah, that's worse than annoying, it's a battlefield. People do this in talking, too, they don't get sarcasm, and it can just rip things apart in ways the sarcastic person might not have intended (unless they're being passively-aggressively sarcastic, in which case we're talking turtles all the way down).

But for light/obviously non-aggressive repartee as seen above sometimes I think it just adds too many layers of complexity to even have to denote that it's sarcasm! That said, I did it anyhow *sigh*
