For my money, it seems that utility is best used in feeds that only update every once in a while. If people are constantly posting new fics in a fandom, that feed will overrun your reading list and you won't get anything else, because if Ao3 has a functionality to allow you to get the feed as a single daily digest instead of a new post with every new post, I haven't found it.
