How can you consistently type you're when you don't mean you are? Does the apostrophe signify nothing to you?

It seems that 99.9% of the population has the opposite problem: YOUR!!! "Your cute. I see your going to your party." It is SOOOO ANNOYING!!!!

One of my former roommates, who wanted to go to law school, HATED having her grammar corrected, even in private. So I got to listen to this future lawyer of America say things like "would you like to go to a movie with my boyfriend and I?"

I basically agree with what everyone else has said-- though misusing "your" for "you're" is bad enough, misusing the contraction is even worse. I mean, don't they realize that the apostrophe actually stands for something? ::grumble::

Yes, the apostrophe signifies ownership with many English nouns. E.g., "Connie's blog contained Kaiden's comment about someone else's bad spelling." "Your" doesn't follow this rule (and if it did it would be "you's" and not "you're"), but that is where the mistake could easily creep into a person's writing.

I hate that... not seeing it, so much as making it. It's impossible to get its spelling right 100%.

There is a chip shop in a village near us and the signwriting across the front of the window proudly tells us that they sell "Fish and Chip's" . I am often tempted to wander in there and ask Chip's what? but I don't think they'll get it.
