I just finished Rez Dogs. Joseph Bruchac has written quite a lot of middle grade and YA over his career, and other than the fact that I'm always iffy about novels in verse and that it's really weird to read historical fiction about events that happened less than two years ago (this is very much set in the First Wave of the Pandemic) I have no complaints. He certainly didn't target the wrong villain here, or give the villain some unrealistic motivation.
(The villain is the pandemic. Its motivation is to be a pandemic. You can't flub this unless you try.)
