Look, if a character has eyestalks, would that be okay? (Though yuck, you never know how clean a surface might be, and do you really want that shit in your EYES?)

It really is troubling to me that I've only seen this word in reference to eyes in fantasy. It's not such a common term that the meaning will spring to mind. As I've said numerous times before, you gotta define it before you apply it to eyes
