I wasn't as certain as you were, but I was baffled by the original declaration that shutdowns would only be for a few weeks. That didn't parse with my understanding of how pandemics work, and I said so in a puzzled post last March 16.

A shutdown of a few weeks might have worked if we'd all really really really stayed home.

Ironically, if COVID was a lot more serious, it probably would've been over by now - everybody would've said "HOLY SHIT!" and stayed inside and the death toll might've ended up even lower.
