The maskless one clearly has an artistic licence for going without a mask: otherwise we couldn't see the nose. (Hmm, maybe I read too much Edward Eager as a kid.)

Yes, when I saw the first one I didn't realize at first it was wearing a mask (since the mask is white) and asked Eva where the carrot nose was! "He can't have one, he's wearing a mask", but I guess she decided to oblige me with this later one.
