First, Jenn received a very large check from her previous employer. It's been a year since she worked there, so that's weird.

Then, as we're puzzling this over, Home Depot calls. I had my doubts about ordering a washer from them, we've had a number of missing deliveries, but I said "They install it! How badly can they screw this up?"

A week after the install, we find out: They gave us the wrong washing machine. I did say when we got it that it seemed a bit strange that we had a glass lid, but honestly, I'd looked at the reviews and I'd looked at the price and I'd said "Okay!" so it was entirely possible I'd somehow missed that feature. Weird, but possible.

But no, they gave us somebody else's washer instead, and took a week to figure it out.

Home Depot brought my washing machine out and then refused to install it, because it didn't have an 'air gap.' Thankfully my brother stepped in. And to my utter surprise, they credited back the installation fee without my having to call and nag.

So I just lol at their bringing you the wrong one. The question is, is it a more expensive one? Then keep it and don't let them charge you for their difference! It was their mistake. But if it was cheaper, make them credit you the difference or bring you the right machine.

Have you used the washer? Because I doubt the real owner now wants a used washing machine. So it's most likely now yours.

All our fun appliance escapades used to be with Sears, back when they were a real company. Their idea of delivery used to be depositing a refrigerator in the road in front of our house. They were also bad about charging to carry off old appliances and then refusing to take them. My husband got on their truck with his cell phone and refused to move until he had their boss on the phone over that last one.

I didn't have good luck with HD installation. They use independent contractors, so I think the lack of accountability is a problem. But it sounds like you did better with yours than I with mine. They couldn't finish the water heater because they didn't do electrical, and they didn't take the old one away.

Some of the washing machines in my apt bldg had to be replaced because the plugs were incompatible with the outlets.

That's certainly something. And also a thing that makes me much less likely to want their installers bear anything of mine.

I'm glad the manager stepped in. You shouldn't have been charged for their f-up.

We've bought a couple of appliances, including installation and removal-of-the-old-one, from Lowe's and been reasonably satisfied. The last example was a washer and dryer. There was some confusion because it was a gas dryer, and the installers (not sure whether they work directly for Lowe's or for a subcontractor) thought it was an all-electric dryer, and they weren't authorized by their employer to touch a gas line. This being NYC, of course, I handed them some cash, they attached it to the gas line, and everything has been fine.
