And I certainly hope that this is exactly what will happen, even the mail-in ballots. (This should go without saying, but any state that doesn't start counting early or mail-in ballots until after Election Day is, if not actually suppressing the vote, certainly skirting very close.)

I'm not sure I agree with your parenthesis, coming from the point of view of a Canadian who just went through a provincial election where mail-in ballots legally can't be counted until 13 days after election day, and I really don't think vote suppression is the reason - I don't see vote suppression being a big thing over here.

That sounds like something that started during horseback days and wanting all the votes to be physically received before beginning... I’m surprised there hasn’t been a movement to change that requirement.

For America, I certainly believe that every vote should be counted. And if you scratch any effort to not count, it’s usually voter suppression.

That we must have results within 48 hours is arrant nonsense. There's a reason states don't certify the vote until December 13; that is to allow time for accurate counting and relaying the results without benefit of internet, telephone, automobile or any other modern invention.

A lot of states don't allow counting to begin until election day, but also allow counting to continue for as long as it takes. Indiana is such a one.

Yes. In my state it's county by county which is terrifying. My county will be counting them frantically while others try to procrastinate in the hopes of skewing the results in their favor.

Every vote should be counted. I would love to have an election in my lifetime where every vote cast is counted, rather than anyone having to jump through hoops or succeed at court cases to make sure their properly cast ballot is counted or to have equal access to swift voting as another racial group does.

I live in Washington State and we all get mailed ballots here. It says on the envelope that the ballot must be postmarked by/on Nov. 3 to be counted, so theoretically I could have dropped my ballot off in a mailbox on Tuesday and still have it be counted.

However, thanks to all these reports of ballots just sitting around in mailrooms and not getting counted, I chose to drop my ballot off in an official ballot box. (I've actually always done that, the ballot box is only a couple of blocks away.)

It terrifies me that some ballots might not be counted.

Florida is actually just ... backlogging the mail, not delivering it. Mail-in ballots are within the piles of backlogged mail. An employee whistle blew. Dems gotta be proactive on this! As mentioned ad nauseum here, even here in NYC, the post office and/or BOE just never bothered to process my application for a mail-in ballot.

It took me weeks to do my vote (Pennsylvania, based in UK) and eventually I mailed a federal write-in ballot.

I have a lot of issues with voting systems in the US (lot to be said for practically everyone having a polling station within walking distance, stubby pencils and fireproof boxes, and the slips are counted by hand with observers from all parties), but one thing I do like is the website Pa at least now has which confirms dates of receipt and acceptance of all my ballots, showing that I did manage to vote every 2 years since 2004.
