This is because bodies are both amazing and a little gross.

Anyway, that's a little more long-term, but it's something to consider if it comes up in your fiction at any time.

Perhaps new makers of sourdough bread are also contributing to the shortage of Mason jars. I bought a couple to keep my starter in.

When I was a kid, the grandma of the neighbouring farm used to call the cows home from the fields with a kulning-type song. Sometimes when I remember my childhood it seems like something from a storybook. Skiing to school and running around the forests all day with hardly any supervision...

Buying jars for preserving is an alien thought for me. I collect olive jars etc all winter and use them for preserving. Is there something I'm missing with this, are the store-bought mason jars somehow superior?

It's not really safe to reuse the lids. That's the problem - the jars are fine from the store, but if you're canning you need to use new lids. So it's mostly the lids that are running out.

What happens to the lids? I mean sometimes the protective... something gets scratched and the the lid might rust, but other than that I haven't detected anything. Are the lids leaking something in my jams (horror face) ?

Canning lids are designed to be used once. Reuse might mean they don't seal properly, putting you at risk for disease, particularly botulism.

Ok so as long as they do seal properly (middle part plopping down) should be safe. Pheeew!

Edit I mostly do jam from berries & fruits and put it boiling hot into jars lifted from boiling water and also lids have been dipped in boiling water for 5 min. So I suppose my preserves are safe.
